A Study on Food Service for School Children


Abstract
This study concerns the nutritional status of food in a lunch-b);< and the school lunch program provided for Dong Duck Elementary School Pupils in Oaegu. Two hundred andsix pupils were randomly selected as a sample.
The nutrients contained in a lunch box and sch,:Ysl iuriclt rtlenu wcrc analyzed aCCVrding to the Food Compoaition ¢¥fable.
Nutrients and cost of the Dong Duck Elementary jrhool Lunch were compared to the averck;c nutrient contents of food in a lunch box of o pupil. In addition, cnmpari.ynna between thm Recommended Daily Allowances of nutrients for Korean children aged from 9 to 11 (4th, -5th, and hr.h grade) and that of the contained nutrients in the average lunch box were condnctcd.
The average nutricnits contained in the lunch-box compared with the Rev;ommendcd Daily Albs wance9 are: Calorie ?7.41% (542.60Cal), Protein 72.60¢¥, (16.93gr), rat 35.95i, (3.95gr), Calcium 27,859-¢¥a (111-39mg), Ferret 30.30% (2.63mg), Vitamin A 10.090 (100.93 t_IJ.), VILumin l81 "10,.17¢¥ 1(0. 27rng), Vitamin B3 $$-179-,) (0.36mg), Vitamin C 15,40%

All of the nutrients in the lunch-box fill far below the Recommended Daily Allowance for the 911 age group.
The average nutrients of staple food in the lunahbox cool-wed with the .;idcdishes were found. to contain Caloric 9u.so: ¢¥o, Protein 50.3: a, Fat 5$,27%, Calcium 37.07 Ferret Vita-min A 0.0028%, Vitamin BI 73, 11%, Vitamin B2 21, 09%.
The nutrients of food contained in the Dong Duck Elementary School Lunch Progrom campark¢¥J with the Recommended Daily Allowances were,
1. The Protein, Fat, Ferret, Vitamin 31 and Vitamin B2 content was Fencrally satisfrctory. C:alcuirn, Vitamin A and Vitamin C were lower than the Recommended Daily Allowunc8a. a. The Calorie content vas generally lower for the 911 age group.
The per pupil cost of the lunch-box ryas 41.$7 wore which includes the cost of sbuple. food 16.!12 won and .i0edlnhes 24.9:+ ~,von, whereas the school lunch provided by CSong Duck Dementary School Costs 33 won per pupil.
Que:,tionnaires were sent to four hundred parents (through their children) to find out their Ott¢¥ itude toward the school lunch program. 390(97.50007 of them were returned and 7 of them. (did
not answer at all. Therefore, these were eliminated from the =amlpe.
Ainong 195 parents whose children were eating the school lunch, 172 parents (92, 01%) would pay 40 won for tlae proposed new school lunch program ¢¥whereas only 13 parents (7.03:¢¥0) did not want it.
.Among 198 parents whose children were not having the school lunch, 58 parents (¢¥2;x.25¢¥.0 wou kl agree to have the lunch for their children at the cost of 35 won with the proposed new school lunch program equivalent to 40 won. 126 parents (63, 63%) could not agree to have their Children being, the sch(A lunch beouse of their financial difficulty (74 parents 58,72%), The rest of parents (52 parents 41.280) raised other reasons which were minor problem9.
Among the tatsl of 383 parents, 309 parents (30.680) would agree to gave school lunch for tlmir children if the cost of the proposed new school ranch progran1 would be .35) %Vvol to ¢¥10 Won .end if minor rirohlema concerning the School ¢¥lunch program are solved.
Sixty parents {15.560) raised questions ab7ut the school lunch progrant concerning sanitary problems, taste of bread, and the quantity of lunch.
Among 383 parents. 358 parents answered and 25 parents did not.
When school officer ;inked if the ptavents would help during the school lunch hour, 101 parents indicated they could not help at all, but 177 parents, replied they could help,
Among 177 parents, 40 parents of them could share their time from one or two hours hevcrydity except Saturday and 107 parents could serve; to 3 days per week,
Throvgh this study, it is evident that further investigation should be done of the :school lunch program which can l.w provided 35 won with the proposed new school lunch program.
The piirents pnrticipition in the school lunch program would he improved the understanding between 9cho3l and parents as well as inscare better nutrition and ;anitntion for. the children.
